Dogs (both male and female) can mark and potty several times when walking with their human, but some dogs seem to become obsessed with it.
Bear Bear, my female Wheaton Terrier, used to do this — and she was spayed!
She’d always potty before we left our yard but as soon as we came across anything vertical, there’d she go peeing/marking. Even when her bladder was empty and she had nothing left to deposit she would go through the motions.
Does your dog pee constantly on walks? To solve the ‘problem’ I would bring treats with me and the second before the squat, I’d make a squeaky noise and toss her a treat. I’d vary where I threw it so she’d have to hunt for it. It worked for Bear Bear and eventually the quick stops lessened.
In today’s video on the dog walking topic, this question is discussed.
If you have a difficult time taking your dog for a walk because of his (or her) incessant need to pee/mark, you’re in the right place.
Tips to Solve the Dog Peeing and Marking Problem
- Make sure to practice leadership with your dog
- Place collar up higher on their neck versus resting on their vocal chords
- You can have your dog do a trick versus giving a treat
- Make sure your dog is spayed or neutered
- Another suggestion is to keep the dog on a short leash, the longer the lead the more freedom your pooch has
- The second your dog starts to pee/mark, you can change the direction of your walk
- You can weave or zig zag on your walk versus walking a straight path
- This and the previous tip will help keep your dog on his toes and force him to pay attention to you
This issue can be corrected and managed. It’s not a reason to stop walking your dog, but a prime reason to CONTINUE walking him or her.
