My Comeback Song and Inspiration From Rick Nelson

I’m a music lover. 70’s music is by far my favorite to listen to. There’s just something about the music, the innocence, the lyrics  and the smoothness of songs from that era.

This afternoon I went to Kinko’s (my second office) and printed off some advertising material for an event we have this weekend. In the background Glen Campbell’s Rhinestone Cowboy was playing on the little radio that Kinko’s staff has behind the desk. Normally sportstalk radio is blaring but today, this young buck, maybe 20 years old, was rockin’ to some comeback songs from the 70’s. I told the sales guy that I hadn’t heard that song forever and it brought back lots of good memories.

After my business was done and all my material was printed I rushed to my truck and turned on the 70’s with Steve Goddard radio show  and listened to the rest of the program and wham, imagine that, a song and story come on the radio that I needed to hear.

Back in 1972 Rick Nelson was at an oldies concert at Madison Square Garden. Instead of fitting in with his fellow musicians dressed in the 50’s attire, he was wearing fashion from the day.  He was set to go on stage and sing some of the hits he made famous in the 50’s, but instead of sticking with those great songs, he played a Rolling Stones cover. The crowd of 22,000 people began to boo.

In the radio interview, he said he didn’t know exactly why they were booing. It could’ve been his clothes or his song choice. He didn’t know but being on that stage with all those people booing scared him.

That moment spawned his comeback song, Garden Party.

Motivation and Inspiration

If you listen to the lyrics of Garden Party, it’s pretty hysterical once you know the background. What could’ve been a negative, Rick Nelson turned into a positive.

Where Do You Find Encouragement?

Everyone has moments in life where they aren’t always supported. There’s days where no matter how much effort you put into making a situation work it doesn’t. We all need motivation.

An incident recently happened with my business that made me question my actions and my role as a pet sitter. I felt humiliated, betrayed and hurt. Like all the effort I put into this particular situation was tossed right out the window and this potential client just didn’t care.

Business is business. I can’t take things personally. I can dress the part, blend in with my surroundings or I can do my thing. I don’t know why consumers make the decisions they do. Target doesn’t call Walmart to gripe when their ‘customers’ purchase things from them versus being brand loyal. I can’t concern myself with the question of why, I just need to focus on doing what I know I’m doing right and keep doing what I feel called to do.

Being a business owner and marketing myself and my business takes tough skin and the ability to separate myself from the business.

Do You Need A Comeback Song?

Rick Nelson did it. He had a successful career, went out on top and had a great comeback song.

Now I’m off to go write mine.

Here’s the video that inspired me…
