Kick Back Be Thankful

Just Coolin’

Mozie has it right.

Kick back be thankful.

He’s taking a cat nap and probably thinking, ‘I’m glad I have a home that keeps me warm, a soft couch I can sleep on and food to feed my big belly’…well, maybe he isn’t thinking that but a little anthropomorphizing doesn’t hurt anyone, right? And I’m sure I’m not the only one who puts words in our cats mouth! 🙂

On a serious note, this day, Thanksgiving Day, brings a lot of emotion for me. When I was younger turkey day was surrounded with lots of cousins, siblings, parents and friends. Now that I’m an empty nester and most of my family have dispersed, it’s a little lonely.

Yes, each holiday is insanely busy since I’m a pet sitter. And actually I’m not alone at all on Thanksgiving. I usually visit at least 8 homes on turkey day, with each home having at least one dog and maybe a cat or two.

The dogs and cats are excited to see me, and I them, but I long to spend this day with my daughter and granddaughter. I long to have the closeness I once felt with people I love. I want to see my daughter and granddaughter be happy, thrive, love, live full lives with people that care about them and has their best interests at heart. I want family celebrations like we used to have.

I want to have holiday dinners albeit vegetarian ones, (shhh, they won’t know it’s Tofurkey!) and celebrate family in my home. I want my granddaughter to run around my house with Tyson, Boston and Sonny right beside her, catching her food crumbs and licking her hands clean.

Until that happens, I’ll continue doing what I do on Thanksgiving and holidays: I’ll kick back and be thankful. I’ll love on your pets, let dogs out to potty, clean litter boxes, collect chicken eggs, walk dogs, clean up poop and vomit, set off security alarms on accident (haha, just kidding), send updates to our clients, zip in and grab a quick bite to eat and rush home to let my dogs out to potty.

Don’t take this the wrong way. I’m happy and feel blessed to be able to do what I want on Thanksgiving. I don’t have a boss lurching over my shoulder or crabby customers getting impatient and rude. I love what I’m doing, I’m thankful and humble…just long for more.

So when you’re having dinner with your friends and family, throw me a quick little Salud! and be thankful. Be very thankful.

God Bless,
