Winter Keeps IACC Indianapolis Animal Care and Control Busy

According to The Indy Channel news program IACC has responded to over 317 reports of animals left outside in freezing temperatures; most were dogs without shelter. Click this link to read the story.

Pets In Freezing Temperatures

It’s 2015 people and in a weeks time period, 28 animals were confiscated. Why are you still leaving pets outside in frigid winter temperatures? This will be something I never understand.

Indianapolis Animal Care and Control (IACC) works hard behind the scenes to provide shelter for the pets in their care. With the temperature dropping more pets will need their help and YOUR HELP to be their eyes and ears.

The Muncie Animal Shelter has responded to many calls just like IACC. Their kennels have dogs they’ve confiscated because the dogs didn’t have shelter. Each city faces the same problem every winter, ever year.

Please don’t leave your dog outside to fend for themselves, it’s winter. Please bring your pets inside when the temperature plummets. Just because they have fur does NOT mean they can withstand below freezing temperatures.

Besides freezing to death, these things can happen to your dog when they’re kept outside:

  • chain can freeze to the ground which would limit their range of motion
  • chain or tether can get tangled up or wrapped around trees or other obstacles
  • water can freeze
  • food can get dumped over and covered in snow
  • your dog can get frostbit on their ears, nose and feet

Any of these situations would be horrible for your dog to endure and for kitties left outside, they face their own challenges also.

Some cats hide in cars to stay warm or drink fluids that fall from cars. They can get injured or killed from the car motor or die from drinking antifreeze.

Cats can get frostbit and can freeze to death just like dogs so please bring them inside or at least provide them a wind-proof shelter that has fresh straw or blankets that will keep them warm.

If you need help with shelter, straw or food for your pets, please contact us and PLEASE report any pets left outside without shelter. You could save their life!
