Ideally you should have 1 extra cat box for the number of cats you have, so 2 cats, 3 boxes, 4 cats, 5 boxes, etc. Boxes should be spread around house and vary in type. Covered, uncovered, low sides, higher sides. That way the cats will pick the ones they like best.
